between those who
came before me
and those who follow me
I learned this joyful prayer of lineage from Kumu Lomi Harry Uhane Jim. Harry shared this prayer in a class I attended with a big smile on his face, laughter and passion in his voice, and he uses expressive hand motions for emphasis.
The specific wording is mine, based on my memory of Harry's words. I added the references to "any and all gender variations".
Mothers, sisters, aunties and daughters in our lineage from today back to the beginning of creation, we love you!
Fathers, brothers, uncles and sons in our lineage from today back to the beginning of creation, we love you!
Relatives of any and all gender variations in our lineage from today back to the beginning of creation, we love you!
Our lives reflect the sum total of all of you.
Male descendants who come through us, directly or indirectly, we love you!
Female descendants who come through us, directly or indirectly, we love you!
Descendants of any and all gender variations who come through us, directly or indirectly, we love you!
We joyfully embrace our privilege & responsibility to connect those who came before us and those who follow us.
While speaking this lineage prayer, I have intent to maintain
compassion for my
relatives and ancestors, including those who did things I'm
disturbed by. It helps to remind myself that if these people had the
information and/or experiences that I have now, they would have made
different choices.
